As the restrictions in response to COVID-19 have continued, Ofgem has been working closely with the energy industry to ensure consumers, particularly vulnerable consumers, continue to be protected. In October 2020 they strengthened protections for customers, making it a requirement that suppliers put customers in debt on a realistic and appropriate repayment plan. Suppliers have also voluntarily agreed to provide additional support to customers during the pandemic.
This is a worrying time for many, particularly those who may be facing financial hardship. To assist our office in supporting people struggling to pay their energy bills, Ofgem have put together the attached document (available at the bottom of this page). This brief guide sets out the help available from suppliers, government schemes such as the Winter Fuel Payment, and where to find advice on managing debt and budgeting.
If someone is struggling to pay their gas or electricity bills or they get into debt, they should contact their energy supplier as soon as possible.
