Every year, Scotland faces about 130,000 untreated heart valve disease patients over 65 years old, and Scottish hospitals have little access to minimally invasive therapies that offer a safer option for many older patients. Scottish patients deserve improved access to diagnosis and treatment and on the attached visual you can see a significant variation in number of patients treated across Scotland. This is why it is so important to have access to timely diagnosis and treatment for health valve disease patients in Scotland.
Thousands of routine heart check-ups have been missed through the Covid pandemic and scores of people with life-threatening heart valve disease may be undiagnosed, despite the fact that people with underlying cardiovascular conditions such as heart valve disease are one of the most vulnerable groups to suffer from severe COVID-19 complications. This is why I’m supporting Heart Valve Week 2020 in order to promote the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment.
