I was delighted to meet with Janet Henry and Janet Rutherford from Glenrothes at Holyrood Park to promote the “Marie Curie Blooming Great Garden Party”. The Janets and Marie Curie do amazing work and ask us for our support in recognising the hard work done in supporting people with terminal illness and their families. The service provided by Marie Curie is invaluable.
Last year MSPs raised over £3,100 for Marie Curie by holding tea parties in their constituencies. Their efforts turned cakes into care by funding 155 Marie Curie nursing hours. Supporters all over Scotland held over 600 tea parties too, totaling over £81,500 for the charity.
In 2016/17 Marie Curie provided care and support for 8,394 people living with a terminal illness and their families in Scotland. Their nurses provide free care to people in their own homes in 31 local authorities, and in their hospices in Edinburgh and Glasgow. They also provide nationwide support through their information and support service including their national helpline.
It was great to join with Marie Curie volunteers from across Scotland, who are active in local fundraising groups, members of the nursing and caring services team, valued Marie Curie supporters, partners across the NHS, local authorities and the third sector. It is important to recognise the work that all these people do and for us to continue to support that work.
