There is going to be a further squeeze on household bills following the news that Scottish Water have announced a 4.2% rise in household water bills across Scotland and as such I have called on the Scottish Government to rethink the rise.
The bill rise was announced by the Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero, Energy and Transport Michael Matheson on Friday (4th Feb) – the day after the announcement that energy prices are set to soar by 54%.
The cost of living crisis is growing out of hand and seems to be getting worse by the day.
Already people are telling me they are worried about their energy bills going up, and it looks like they are set to continue rising for some time.
With rising inflation, interest rates and national insurance, on top of the energy price hikes, people are struggling to make ends meet – especially given the fact wages have stagnated. It is completely unsustainable for people to try and afford this.
This is why I am asking the Scottish Government to rethink their proposed water bill rise – people are already struggling – we don’t need to add to the financial burden on households.
The Scottish and UK Governments must work together to find a way out of this crisis as constantly passing the buck onto household bills is not the answer.
We already know some people are having to choose between heating and eating, any extra costs are simply going to make this crisis so much worse than it already is.
