This week I spoke in a debate in Parliament on supporting Asylum Seekers in Scotland.
I made the point that, when earlier this year I visited Auschwitz, the Nazi extermination camp that saw millions murdered, the tour guide made the point to me that many Jews seeking refuge from other countries were turned away. Indeed, the legal right to seek asylum, safety and to be treated with dignity by the country of sanctuary emerged after the Second World War from the international community’s revulsion at the genocide of the Holocaust.
People are fleeing violence, intimidation, fear and death and it is important that Scotland leads the way in providing support, help within our country and direct aid to those areas and countries where so many have fled.
We cannot just look the other way, we all have a responsibility to help those who need help.
