I raised the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen in the Scottish Parliament this week, asking the Scottish Government what support it is offering and what representations it is making to the UK Government on the situation.
I have also written to all MPs across Mid Scotland and Fife, calling on them to raise the situation further up the political agenda in Westminster to try and find a solution to the conflict and end the mass suffering.
It is incredible and devastating that since 2015, 85,000 children under five in Yemen have starved to death, and one child dies there every 10 minutes from a preventable cause, and yet most of the world doesn’t know.
I understand that there is a focus on domestic issues in this country at the moment, however, when you see the scale of the situation that is engulfing innocent families in Yemen our domestic issues seem to feel pale in comparison.
This is one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, and it is largely being ignored because those who are dying are in one of the poorest countries in the Middle East. We especially can’t ignore it, as many of the bombs that are killing civilians and decimating the infrastructure causing widespread starvation were sold to Saudi Arabia by the UK.
I am asking politicians of all parties to make sure this situation is given the attention it deserves, and for the United Kingdom Government to investigate the violation of international law that is taking place, as well as the hunger crisis that exists and reconsider the arms sales from the UK to Saudi Arabia in light of the devastation these arms are causing to other human beings.
