I was delighted to join, and show solidarity, with the many university and college staff from UCU on strike bringing their campaign from all over Scotland to the Scottish Parliament recently. Axing educators pensions is not the way to deliver a world class education system. Universities UK should listen to the many voices calling on them to not cut staff pensions. For more information on why the strike is happening, I have included a leaflet from UCU which you can read below.
I also was very proud to join with University of Stirling students who were showing solidarity with their staff from UCU on strike by occupying a university building in their campus. The students, and those on strike, made calls for no capitulation. It is fantastic to see the solidarity shown by students for their teachers, in what must be a tough time for them both.
The strike action has now ended, but no agreement has been reached, with the potential for further strike action still to take place in the near future. I hope Universities UK get back round the negotiating table, and understand that in order to have world class education system, we can’t axe staff pensions.
